Pinocchio (1940)

Pinocchio is a 1940 American animated musical fantasy produced by Walt Disney, based on Italian novel by Carlo Collodi. We can say the story is about the wish come true. The main characters are an old wood-carver Geppetto who carves a wooden puppet named Pinocchio, and Jiminy, a grasshopper who is Pinocchio’s friend and ‘conscience’.

One night before he goes to sleep, Geppetto make a wish on a star that Pinocchio, his newly carved puppet, becomes a real boy so he can have a son. During the night, a Blue Fairy brings Pinocchio to life, with the promise he can become a real boy only if he proves himself brave, truthful, and unselfish.

However, Pinocchio’s story does not get off to a good start. Instead of going to school, he joins Stomboli’s puppet show and become a huge attraction as a puppet who can dance and sing without the strings. Pinocchio is very happy that everyone likes him, but when he wants to go home, Stromboli locks him in a birdcage from which Jiminy is not able to free him. When Blue Fairy appears and ask Pinocchio why he did not went to school, the lies Pinocchio tells her make the things worst and his nose to grow longer and longer ( I wish we have that in real life). The Blue Fairy gives him a chance and set him free after he vows to be good from now.

Unfortunately, on his way home, he meets Foulfellow and Gideon, who are looking for young boys to take with them to Pleasure Island, and they convince him that Pinocchio needs vacation. The boys on Pleasure Island think they are on the great vacation where they can do whatever they want without any rules, but they don’t know that island hides horrible curse. All boys are transformed into donkeys and sold into slave labour. Jiminy warns Pinocchio and they manage to escape, and Pinocchio is only partially transformed into a donkey.

When he finally gets back home, he discovers Geppetto is gone. He went to look for Pinocchio and was swallowed by a giant whale Monstro. Pinocchio is so determined to save his father and after being swallowed by whale as well they manage to escape on a beach. Geppetto and Jiminy survive, but Pinocchio became just a wooden doll. The Blue Fairy decides that he has proven himself brave, truthful, and unselfish, and changes him to a real boy. The story ends with the group celebrating.
